There are approximately 54 cemeteries in Black Hawk County. Of these, five are considered "lost," with little remaining to show their existence, perhaps a few trees or a few markers along a fence row are left, but difficult to find for the casual traveler.

A pioneer cemetery is defined by law as a cemetery with six or less burials in the past fifty years, many of the small township cemeteries so qualify. Virtually every cemetery in Black Hawk County that was established before 1900 has a Civil War Soldier among the early settlers interred there.

Elmwood, Fairview, and Waterloo cemeteries are all filled with early settlers of the Waterloo area, as are Hillside and Fairview in Cedar Falls.

The oldest cemeteries in Black Hawk County are probably Highland and Newell Cemeteries, northwest of Cedar Falls and near Finchford. This was the first settled area of the county.

Two rather interesting cemeteries, established about 1910, are the Sons of Jacob Jewish Cemetery and Black Hawk County Potters Field, which are side by side on Osage Road East. Both are well maintained by caretakers of the Sons of Jacob Cemetery.

This is a listing of all known cemeteries in Black Hawk County, Iowa. In this county are three cemeteries named Fairview Cemetery. The locations of these cemeteries are listed. Also, two cemeteries are named Zion Lutheran Cemetery, one of which is also known as Westburg Cemetery. You may link to more information by clicking on the red numbers on the map.

1. Anton Cemetery is located in Section 15, Cedar Township, 4 miles south of Washburn, Iowa, on Highway 218 then 1 mile west on D 46.

2. Bennington Township Cemetery is located in Section 27, Bennington Township, on the corner of North Elk Run Road and East Mt. Vernon Road, next to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery.

3. Benson Cemetery is located in Section 6, Cedar Falls Township, on North Butler Road just north of its intersection with Highway 57.

4. Blessing Cemetery is located in Lincoln Twp., next to Immaculate Conception of Blessed Virgin Mary Church on Highway 63 at its intersection with West Tama Road D 52 south of Hudson, Iowa.

15. Garden of Memories Cemetery is located at 3669 Logan Ave. (on Highway 63 North), Waterloo, IA 50703.

16. Gerholdt Cemetery is located in Union Township, Section 17, on Van Wert Road between West Cedar Wapsie Road (C 57) and Mark Road.

17. Greenwood Cemetery (aka Mullarkey, Riverside, St. Patrick's, St. Bernard's) is located in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on the corner of North College Street & Ida Street.

18. Gresham Cemetery is located in Bennington Township, Section 11 on the corner of North Raymond (V 49) & East Gresham Road.

19. Highland Cemetery is located in Washington Township, Section 22, on Ford Road, north of Black Hawk Park at the end of the long access road.

20. Hillcrest Cemetery (aka Memorial Park, Boggsville, Black Hawk Co. Cemetery) is located in Waterloo, Iowa, on Osage Road between Milwaukee Ave. and Skyview Road, next to Sons of Jacob Cemetery.

21. Hillside Cemetery is located in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Lone Tree Road, between Highway 218 & Center Street (V 14).

22. Hudson Cemetery is located on the southwest side of Hudson, Iowa, Black Hawk Township, Section 27 on Eldora Road (D 35).

23. Lester Township Cemetery is located in Lester Township, Section 21, on Owen Road between Lester Road and East Bennington Road.

24. Lincoln Cemetery is located in Lincoln Township, Section 19 on West Eagle Road between Hicks Road and Grundy Road.

28. Muslim Cemetery is located on Osage Road, between Milwaukee Street and Skyview Road, on the east side of Black Hawk County Cemetery.

29. New Barclay Cemetery is located in Barclay Township, Section 24, on Newell Street between North Hasner Road and Baker Road.

30. Newell Cemetery is located in Washington Township, Section 3 on Winslow Road (C 55) west of Janesville, Iowa.

31. Old Barclay Cemetery is located in Barclay Township, Section 12, on Cunningham Road between East Airline Highway and Barclay Road (D 16).

32. Orange Township Cemetery is located in Orange Township, Section 21, in Waterloo, west of the 6300 block of Kimball Avenue on top of the hill.

34. Pleasant Hill Cemetery (aka Sawyer Cemetery) is located in Spring Creek Township, Section 20 at the corner of D 48 & Ferry.

35. Poyner Township Cemetery is located in Poyner Township, Section 15, on the corner of Gilbertville Road & Indian Creek Road.
