Burke/Du Mond "Josh Higgins" House

Location:

Finchford
Across road from Finchford store

Joel Burke started the first sorghum mill in Finchford in 1876, and it ran well into the next century, giving Finchford a reputation for sorghum. His daughter, Margaret, married Eugene Du Mond; and their son Joe was born in Finchford. In 1929, Joe created a radio show about the town of Finchford and its inhabitants for WMT Radio as a weekly serial. "Josh Higgins of Finchville, the little town by the bend o' the river," became so popular that the show was syndicated by NBC and broadcast in every state of the USA and also in Canada. Joe went on to be a founder of KXEL radio station in Waterloo. In addition, Josh Higgins Park was the original name of George Wyth State Park.
