| The
first iron bridge in the county was built at this site in
1867 at a cost of $4,500. The bridge has since been replaced
by a newer structure. Parts of the bridge are retained as
a decorative border for the city parking lot, also on Main
Street.
A special thanks
goes to Scott Voelschow
for offering his drawing of the First Iron Bridge in Black
Hawk County for use on CedarNet's Historical Tour of Black
Hawk County. The artist was born in Waterloo and raised
in La Porte City, attending elementary through high school
there. His artistic rendering of the Iron Bridge received
a prize at an art festival. To see an enlarged version of
the drawing, click on the above drawing or click here.
