John and Mary McQuilken built this house, near the heart
of downtown La Porte City, in 1900. The McQuilken house
is of historical significance for the town because of its
colonial revival architecture and also because of its remarkable
state of preservation. John McQuilken was a local meat and
poultry merchant. In addition, he also sold insurance.
Today the home
is a private residence. It is listed on the National Register
of Historical Places.
