| Built in 1889,
this large brick church was constructed to replace four
earlier buildings that had served the Gilbertville area.
The first church was made out of cast off slabs of lumber
from a local mill, and then replaced in 1857 by a larger
stone church. By 1873, the Immaculate Conception Parish
had grown to the point where a larger church was deemed
necessary, so Father Scallon replaced the stone church with
a frame structure. Unfortunately, this building was destroyed
by a windstorm in 1874, a year after its completion. The
current building was then built to serve the Gilbertville
area. |
