en during the prohibition years may have been pressed into service as a giant "speakeasy", a gangster resort, and possibly other things not usually cited by polite people(around children, at least). Such were the rumours around our neighborhood. I knew it as an apartment building on my many and varied routes as a paperboy during the early 1950s, and to this day think of it as romantic architecture possibly harboring real or merely reputed legends. Steven Spielberg or his like could make quite a film around the Mandalay, maybe a Tom Swift serial (centered in the 20s, but "corrected" for modern tastes, perhaps).
I understand that, towards the end of the 20th century, the Mandalay was almost destroyed by fire, and that some young people took up the challenge to restore it. Last month, out for my 45th CFHS class reunion, we drove past the structure, and noted that it has in fact endured into the 21st century.
Whether you decide to look into the Mandalay for inclusion here, I would really like to know the full and true story of its past.
