<Kente Design> Exploring Kente Design Concepts: Electronic Quilts

Theme: Ashante Fabric Design
Grade Multigrade, ages 8-14.
Platform: MacIntosh
Software: Claris Paint, Claris Draw, and NetScape.
Objectives: Each student will create works that incorporate principles of Ashante textile design.

Steps

Week one:
Students will look at work of Art by John Biggers, and learn how he drew upon African sources for design elements in his work. If possible,they will view original work by an African-American Artist.

Week Two:
Students will study examples of Ashante Kente, and learn principles of color selection and organization of patterns. They will create a woven paper design that illustrate one of these principles.
Week three:
Computer media. Students will use computer graphics to create designs that incorporate Ashante design principles.
