| Academic Decathlon Winners |
|
Twenty-eight students, grades 9-12 recently represented East High in the Regional Academic Decathlon Competition. On January 28th and 30th, the students and their coaches, Kerrie Michael and Matt Tracy competed at Columbus High School against 5 other high schools from around the area. While we did not qualify for the state competition this time, we did extremely well for our first showing. Academic Decathlon is a competition that tests students in the following subject areas: literature, math, science, art, music, economics, and a super quiz. In addition, every competitor must give a prepared speech, an impromptu speech, and an interview. Each year there is a selected theme and all the testing material is over the theme. This year’s theme was the European Renaissance. We are already looking forward to next year. The theme for next year is China. Listed below are those who participated and their awards. They will be congratulated and receive their ribbon/medals at this year’s Academic Awards Ceremony on March 28, 2006 at 7:30 in the auditorium. Any students interested in participating next year should see Mrs. Michael or Mr. Tracy and listen for announcements regarding Academic Decathlon.

Advisory Students give back to community
Back in January, Mrs. Mnayer’s 10th grade advisory students noticed that many people would sit at the bus stops along University Avenue in the bitter cold, wind, and rain for long periods of time. They decided to do something about their concerns by building three bus shelters along University Avenue. It has been a long process, but the student have learned much about government agencies, how they work and the process involved in making an idea reality.
The students learned they had to come up a name and a logo, write a mission statement and develop official goals. The groups name is Advisory for A Better Future. Students have talked to Waterloo City engineers, obtained information about being ADA compliant and obtained quotes from several bus shelter manufacturers. The bus shelters will cost between $5000 and $7000 each. They addressed the MET Transit Manager and Assistant Manger to obtain permission for the project. The advisory class also talked to Michele Temeyer, Director of Community Education for the Waterloo Community Schools and received a go-ahead for the project. Students have completed and sent applications for grants to several community organizations. Several businesses have offered to donate supplies. The advisory group is waiting for funding to come in. Once they have secured funding, the students will need to address The MET Transit Board, the Waterloo City Council and the Waterloo School Board to receive final approval for the bus shelters.
The Advisory for A Better Future plans to continue working during the summer and into the next school year to bring their dreams into reality. As of August 2008, the students have raised $18,000 for the project !
