I am a 1987 graduate of East High School and a 1992 graduate of Simpson College in Indianola, IA where I earned my degree in Elementary Education.  I later obtained my Masters in Educational Leadership from UNI.

I accepted my first teaching job in St. Paul, MN in an elementary setting.  After a few years of teaching I decided to change career paths and began working with adjudicated youth in correctional settings as a Program Director in Minnesota and as a Treatment Director in Pennsylvania.  I then changed career paths again and began working in human service agencies as a program manager and supervisor.

Since I obtained my Masters in Educational Leadership, I have served as an Assistant Principal at Northwest Middle School in Kansas City, Kansas and at Bunger Middle School in Evansdale.  I served as the Bunger Middle School Principal for the past two school years.

While preparing this introduction, I realized that the commonality amongst all my experiences was teaching and learning and trying to find meaningful ways to get the most out of my students regardless of their situation or ability.  Finding talent and success in students whether it be academically or in extra-curricular activities continues to be my mission, and I hope this is contagious to the staff and community I work with to recognize and develop student’s abilities.  I hope we all work together to make learning meaningful and that we recognize the sacrifices some of our students make to be student athletes as well as recognizing their achievements.  I will emphasize the student part of student athlete to help prepare our youth to positively contribute to society.

Brenton Shavers, East High School Athletic Director/Assistant Principal
