Not every athlete who kicks a football earns the fame of Reggie Roby. Maybe that’s because few have ever matched his skill. In 2005, Reggie Roby’s life was cut short by an apparent heart attack. His death shocked and saddened his family, friends, and the world of sports. To honor this great athlete, the Reggie Roby Memorial Fund has been established. Reggie was an incredible athlete and exceptional person who will forever inspire a passion within young people to pursue their dreams and reach for the stars.
This effort is being lead locally by Robert Smith, Norm Granger, and Kerry Burt. All are well-known former team mates of Reggie and have set a goal to raise $250,000 in Reggie’s memory. Helping kids was Reggie’s priorityto do it for his hometown’s kids would have made him proud.
The Reggie Roby Memorial Fund will help Roby’s legacy live on by supporting the young people where it all started-- at East High School and in Waterloo. Contributions will help fund
* The Reggie Roby Fitness Center at East High School
* Football field improvements at East High School
* A sports team van for East High School
* Student aid fund
* Scholarship fund
* Reggie Roby electronic message board at East High
* Youth activities and programs throughout the year
Roby was a 1979 graduate of East High and later made headlines at the University of Iowa and in the National Football League. As a 6’4”, 250-pound kicker, he was an all-state and all-conference baseball player in high school. His passion truly was football.
