This oboe was donated by Allison Offerman, a 2011 graduate of UNI.
The original owner of this 1933 Lorče oboe was Gordon Harstad, an
oboist and metallurgist from Marion, Iowa. Mr. Harstad actively
played with the Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra in the 1950s and 1960s.
Mr. Harstad was an acquaintance of Andrč Andraud, former principal
oboist of the Cincinnati Symphony and brother of English hornist and
Vade Mecum for the Oboist author Albert Andraud. Mr. Harstad asked
Andrč to select an oboe for him while he was visited the Lorče factory
in Paris. Mr. Andraud picked Loree oboe AG 22. Gordon played this oboe
well into the 1970s when he had a heart attack; after that the oboe was
left in a box until his widow presented it to Ms. Offerman in 2008. Harstad’s
widow (Bernice) gave the oboe, her husband’s reed making supplies, and old
music to Allison after reading an inspiring article about her in the Cedar
Rapids Gazette newspaper. Since then Allison has had it appraised at $1500 by
a Cedar Falls instrument repair technician and has now donated it to the
Iowa Band Museum for many to enjoy.
