The band shell is truly a beautiful and unique facility. Acoustically it provides performers the best possible outdoor sound environment with versatile lighting and staging options. Performing musicians report they can not only hear themselves, but can also hear people and sound out in the park extremely well. The general design is based on a 1932 conceptual drawing by noted architect Mortimer Cleveland incorporating classical arch lines in the dome and proscenium, solid concrete-brick-masonry material, and reflected lighting whichs glows against an evening sky. Adding modern sensibilities like lower level restrooms and storage as well as back stage storage, excellent sound equipment, and handicapped access makes this band shell a joy for many to use.
The total front stage apron length is 54 feet by 8 feet with a ramp entrance on the west end and steps on the east end. With electrical outlets in front, it is available for easy access and use any time. The domed portion of the stage is 36 feet wide, 18 feet deep, and has both the reflected colored lighting and direct white flood lighting for performance use. Moveable risers are used to elevate the 45-piece band for concerts. Security is enhanced with a long collapsing gate which stores in two tower gate houses. Also, steel doors with bolt locks, security lights, and easy visibility in the open park provide added security. Two tall light poles away from the stage provide flood and spot lighting to add front illumination for evening programs.
In addition to the weekly summer band concerts, the band shell is available for many kinds of use such as school and youth programs, Sturgis Falls Celebration programs, jazz bands, dancers and thespians, meetings, assemblies, weddings, and so on. Terms for renting the band shell may be made by contacting Dennis Downs, booking agent, 266-2922, or writing to Cedar Falls Band Shell. P.O. Box 144, Cedar Falls, IA 50613, phone (319) 266-1253.
