F-2 Kathy Marek  $5 paid workshop Art Games for Elementary – Crossing the Curriculum Examples of games to be used in the art room as a learning tool, which crosses curriculum in the areas of reading and math.

Dawn Oropeza and Sarah Ekstrand Iowa Art Council Art Education Information: Grants & Residencies-- Iowa Arts Council staff will present information on IAC grant programs with a focus on arts in education, residencies in your school, artist rosters and Iowa artists.

Johanna Russell The Improvement of Critical Thinking Through Art Education-- This presentation discusses research being conducted on the potential ability of an art education curriculum to improve critical thinking.  The purpose of the research is to give validity to art education through data.Barb Caldwell

Barb Caldwell Creative Connections to Self, Others and Nature through Art This interactive presentation will share some of the core aspects of art education that nourish empathy and creative growth in students.  Creativity, self discovery, compassion for others, and sensitivity to the natural world are central benefits of art education. 
These gifts, provided by purposeful art experiences, are essential to children’s development and to social harmony.  They also sustain and nourish art teachers as they face the joys and challenges of contemporary life.

Tours: 1:00-3:00 pm ($5 each) Des Moines is home to some of the most prestigious insurance companies’ fine arts collections. Tour either one of these businesses; the bus will leave from Callanan Middle School.

Breakout Sessions, Fri., 1-3 pm:

F-3 Iron Pour-- (1-3 pm) 2 hr./ $30 paid workshop (limit 25) Kelly Ludeking and the Foundry Education and Fine Arts Group is a non-profit group that teaches individuals of all ages the history and metal casting process.  Participants will receive a 10”x10” open-face sand tile which can be scratched to produce a low relief sculpture, a quarter inch thick.
During the workshop materials and tools will be provided to create a negative design that will cast a positive image, similar to a 3-D printmaking process. The pour will take place Saturday night after the Awards Dinner.

F-4 Ronda Sternhagen (2 hour hands-on; limit 40) Creative Connections with Vocabulary--Crayola Hands-on This Crayola Dream Makers presentation relates the written word with visual images through a variety of pictorial lessons, including: flip books, murals, word cubes and sentence illustrations.

Larry Brandstetter – IAAE The Creative Economy, Fad or Future for Iowa-- "As manufacturing jobs are leaving the United States for Asia, Africa and Central america economist Richard Florida is leading government and business leaders to look closely at what he has deemed the "Creative Economy". What does this mean to teachers of the arts who live in a world of creative energy and teach the creative process every day.  Is this fad or future for Iowa's economic direction and how should teachers of the arts respond?   Can art education sit in the lap of economic development, or economic development sit in the lap of arts education? A look into the future for art educators."

Tiffany Claussen Art and Social Consciousness --Projects and research that aid in broadening global perspectives, advocating awareness and community relations, and increasing the social consciousness of students.

Fri., 2-3 pm:

F-6 Connie Greany $5 paid workshop (limit 30) Raku a Few-- Learn the basics of raku pottery – history, mixing glazes and firing.  Bring 1or 2 bisque fired medium sized clay pieces (no smaller than 3”x 4”or larger than “8x15”) Participants will glaze at this time; then help build the kiln Saturday morning, and sign up for their time to fire their pots during that day.

Cappie Dobyns   Middle School State of the Arts Advocacy --Whether you are hesitant to make formal presentations or find yourself without the time to create one, advocacy must become everyone’s business. Participants will view a power point designed to guide and facilitate the development of a personal advocacy presentation that was created to educate both the lay and educational community about the state of the arts within our schools. Shared through statistical information and quotes from prominent researchers, this presentation offers information about state policies, the visual art curriculum and its ability to impact current educational goals.  Topics beyond cognition – motivation, human experience and meaning, community, diversity and career opportunities – are also included.  CD’s will be available for participants.

Steph Jessen & Mandi McReynoldsVSA Arts of Iowa-- VSA arts of Iowa promotes the creative power in people with disabilities.  This presentation will give an overview of the variety of programs and benefits that are available to educators. They will share techniques in working with students with disabilities as well as the importance of inclusive classroom settings and arts integration. This class will also showcase Start with the Arts, an arts based program developed by VSA arts.

Heather Kenner Electronic Portfolios-- This session will explain how electronic portfolios can increase student attitude and achievement in art and serve as an advocacy tool to promote the importance of art education.  There will be demonstrations and information on how to create an electronic portfolio to use with you students.

Bridget Riley-Inspired Op Art Drawings Students often look at Riley’s work and say “I could never do anything like that”…but they can! Come see how.  Fee includes CD and booklet of all materials.  Lessons can be adapted to upper elementary or middle school.

Krista Wolter & Del Radcliff  Oaxaca--Dell and Krista will be sharing experiences and images from a recent trip to Oaxaca, Mexico last March.  Artworks included are woodcarvings from the areas of Arrayloa and San Martin Tilcajeta, rug weavings from Teotitlán, black pottery from San Bartolo Cayotepec, and ceramic figures from the Aguilar sisters of Ocotlán, and how these rich cultural experiences were integrated into the art curriculum.  Information about future trips planned will also be presented.

T-4 Des Moines Art Center (limit 25) Recognized by international art critics as a world-class museum in the heart of the Midwest, the Des Moines Art Center has amassed an important collection with a major emphasis on contemporary art. Participants will receive a free CD-ROM (targeted at a fourth grade audience) about the Des Moines Art Center’s permanent collection and architecture.

S-5  Becky Johnson & Shawn Reynolds  1 hr./$5 paid workshop Let’s Get Plastered-- Participants will explore many different applications of the plaster bandage medium and will create a cast piece to finish and embellish on their own.

Susan Koenig-VanderHaar – Elementary Art Backpacks--The Art Bag is a backpack that is a family/student art experience.  The backpack contains books and art materials to create art work in one style of an artist, designing structures (architecture) or learning to use different media.  Families can read the books and help create beautiful art work to be displayed at school.

Susan Gabbard and Cappie Dobyns US-China Joint Educational Conference-- In the fall of 2005, NAEA President, Susan Gabbard, led an art delegation to Beijing Normal University in the first US-China Joint Educational Conference hosted by the People to People Ambassadors Program.  Susan and Cappie Dobyns, a delegate representing middle level art education, will present an overview of the Chinese educational system and its renewed focus to deepen education in the arts.  A society and emerging economic power that is both ancient and new, China’s educational accomplishments and goals afford surprising commonalities and differences when examined through an educator’s lens.  Join us to learn more.  (Information about the People to People Ambassadors Program will also be offered)

Rachel Williams  & Amy Pheiler-Wunder Social Activism in the Art Room--This presentation will focus on art “production” as more than the creation of objects, but the idea of art as a means to social change.  The presentation will include slides and information on artists who create “sustainable” art which allows opportunities for participants to create change locally and globally through their work. In addition, lessons will be presented using art as a means to teach about human right issues.
